Sleep Disorders Center
Are You Tired During the Day?
The sooner you call the Sleep Disorders Center, the sooner you can be tested, diagnosed, and treated in our home-like setting
Do you wake up and start dreaming about when you can sneak in a nap? Have trouble focusing at work? Nod off while driving? Wow…that simple bout of insomnia is starting to sound serious! If you’re like 70 million other Americans, you may have a sleep problem, and you should take it seriously.
Sleeping problems can affect more than your good humor. They can have a profound affect on your ability to perform everyday tasks—including such potentially hazardous tasks as driving your car or operating machinery. Sleep deprivation and sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea, can also hurt your health, relationships, job and overall quality of life.
So wake up and smell the solution. Talk to your primary care provider about scheduling a sleep study if you have any of the following symptoms:
- overwhelming daytime fatigue
- chronic snoring
- trouble falling or staying asleep
- trouble concentrating or remembering things
- your bed partner says you stop breathing
- You nap during the day and/or fall asleep when you don’t intend to
If you are diagnosed with a sleep disorder, our specialists discuss and prescribe treatments that work. You'll be amazed at how much better you feel. A brand new life could be one night of testing away.
Take this simple quiz to measure your daytime sleepiness.
Epworth Sleepiness Scale
How likely are you to doze off or fall asleep in the following situations, in contrast to just feeling tired? This refers to your usual way of life in recent times. Even if you have not done some of these things recently, try to work out how they would have affected you. Use the following scale to choose the most appropriate number for each situation:
0 = would never doze
1 = slight chance of dozing
2 = moderate chance of dozing
3 = high chance of dozing
Situation
___ Sitting and talking to someone
___ In a car, while sitting for a few minutes in traffic
___ Sitting, inactive in a public place (e.g. theater or meeting)
___ Sitting and reading
___ Watching TV
___ As a passenger in a car for an hour without a break
___ Sitting quietly after lunch without alcohol
___ Lying down to rest in the afternoon when circumstances permit
Understand your numbers.
If you scored between 7-11, you are mildly sleepy.
If you scored between 12-16, you are moderately sleepy.
If you scored between 17-24, you are severely sleepy.
If you score 7 or higher, you may have a sleep disorder that can be easily treated. Consult your physician about having a sleep study done to try to find out why you are so sleepy.
